SEO stands for search engine optimization. SEO is essentially the various practices and strategies executed in order to make a website as appealing as possible to the major search engines: Google first and foremost, followed by Bing, Yahoo, and then others. SEO is all about maximizing a website’s value via using rich keywords, relevant and unique content, and proper formatting and compliant HTML coding in order to ensure that visitors and search engines alike benefit from visiting the website. The higher a website’s ranking within search engines, the more visitors it will receive, and thus the more profits the website’s owner(s) stand to earn. It’s for this simple reason — profit — that SEO is so very important, in particular to merchants who rely on online sales for the majority of their profits.

There is no specific criteria for ranking highly within search engines, as the search engines themselves are continually updating their algorithms and changing their own standards for what matters and doesn’t matter. There are, however, general guidelines you will certainly want to follow in order to create a high-quality, content-rich website that will attract visitors and search engines alike. Here are a few general tips that you can use as you get started with overhauling your website with organic search optimization in mind:

Focus on quality, not quantity.

When it comes to updating your website, don’t think in terms of a number of articles or even a number of words, but rather the value the content you provide offers your visitors. You would do better to publish two 400-word articles about very interesting and relevant subjects than to publish six 500-word articles that are near-duplicates of one another. Again, focus on quality: this is something that humans and computers alike look for.

Update regularly.

Do your best to maintain your website on a regular basis. If you have a blog, try to post to it daily, or at least every other day. If you post articles in a variety of categories, try to publish a new article at least once per week. And if you have any social media accounts that are updated in conjunction with your account, you’ll want to update those regularly, too – search engines also look at the activity on social media accounts, and use special social-media-specific algorithms to help determine the associated website’s overall value.
