How to Deal with Annoying Co-Workers

No matter how enthusiastic you are about your job, going to work every day can still be a tedious chore especially if you work with people who just seem to rub you the wrong way. Annoying and obnoxious co-workers can make your patience run out and turn a good day into a frustrating one in a blink of an eye. The sad fact is, no matter how much you try to avoid this situation, you’re still going to end up working with at least one person who gets under your skin at some point in your career.  And another fact is, annoying or not, you still have to create a good work relationship with them. Don’t fret though; here are some ways to help you deal with the situation.

Analyze your behavior

As the saying goes, ‘people who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones’. Basically, do not criticize others because you might have the same weaknesses yourself. Perhaps you’re easily annoyed by a certain person because you see in him the same behaviors that you do not like about yourself. Evaluate yourself and try to think of the main reason why this person gets to you.

Talk it over

Once you figure out why you dislike this certain colleague, try to confront him about it instead of complaining to other people and stirring up unwarranted office gossip. It could be possible that this person is not aware of the annoying and obnoxious behavior and the way it affects the people around him. Maybe he keeps on doing it because he doesn’t realize how he comes across, especially if nobody else has had the guts to tell him off. However, see to it that you don’t come off rude or looking for a fight to avoid more misunderstandings between the two of you. Although there’s no absolute guarantee that the person’s annoying behavior will change or at least soften up, the important thing is aired out your concern and tried to settle the issue like a pro.

Take the higher road

If your colleague still doesn’t ease up and you just can’t handle it anymore, sometimes it’s best to simply ignore the behavior and the person—if possible. Take the higher road and just keep your distance as much as possible. Try to limit your interactions and keep everything strictly work-related. The more you spend time with the person, the more irritated you become, which may affect the way you work. Additionally, if the person is doing these annoying things on purpose, he may eventually stop doing it once he sees that he doesn’t affect you anymore.

Stay Positive

Always stay optimistic despite everything because if you dwell on the negative things in life, it will only make you feel worse and won’t help you fix anything. Instead of wasting your energy on your co-worker’s behavior, try to be the bigger person by taking a more positive approach. Through every problem, choose to look at the bright side. This will help you take on a lighter perspective in life and avoid getting stressed over petty things.

In life, you simply cannot avoid dealing with people whom you may not get along well with. With billions of people in the planet sporting gazillions of different attitudes and personalities, there will surely be at least a handful of them that will make you tick. The important thing you have to remember is to respect them still because treating them badly will only reflect to the way you are as a person.
