Collecting Custom Coins

I’ve never been much of a collector. I don’t like looking at books filled with stamps, or shelves stocked to the brim with action figures. My parents enjoy coin collecting however, and it was from them that I learned about their adventures for custom coins.

The term custom coin sounded strange to me at first, for how can coins be customized? Shouldn’t everybody have the same one? It was only after a long explanation, courtesy of my father, that I realized these coins weren’t for spending at all. These coins were specially made as keepsakes or rewards. Like for example, if a person does something very special for his/her company, then the boss may present them with the company’s custom coin. I guess you can say these coins are sort of like medals. They are used by the army, police, EMT, firefighters and different companies and are very hard to come by.
